I have been a subscriber to this magazine on and off for almost 10 years. They recently went to a bimonthly schedule. They continue to have the most down-to-earth, reader-friendly style, with a strong emphasis on making your writing marketable.
Every November, thousands of people take part in National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. Emphasis is on quantity, not quality, and everyone who reaches the word count “wins.” I was one of almost 6,000 winners in 2004 and one of almost 13,000 in 2006. This exercise is a great way to get the words flowing.
The annual summer writing program at the University of Iowa runs dozens of week-long and weekend workshops every June and July. I have attended one weekend a year since 2004. This is an invaluable experience and serves as a powerful motivator to refocus my writing efforts.
